Written Notes

Aged for 40 years, the 1954 Bastardo was in fact the last in the company’s private collection. Though slightly deeper in color, it does not have quite the delineation on the nose of some of the 1927 Bastardo Madeiras that I have tasted. It comes across relatively simple, offering touches of dried honey and beeswax but lacking a little lift. The palate is better than the nose, featuring ginger and cloves on the entry and good acidity. The harmonious, citrus-driven finish shows just a dash of white pepper. This is a very fine Bastardo… but not the very best you could find. Tasted at Blandy’s bicentennial celebration tasting.

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is brownish, and looking bright and medium. On the nose it is open, ripe, pure, refined and forward. The taste is focused, full, harmonious, and medium-sweet, and high in acidity, full-bodied, with concentrated, well-structured and good texture structure. On the palate it is layered and has citrus, toasty, apricot and sherry-like flavours. The finish is long, lingering, flavorful, spicy and vibrant. This wine is a mouthfilling.
