The Story

Outstanding Langtons Classification. A national flagship, from fruit grown to the stately Wallcliffe property, one of the most distinguished vineyards in Australia. Vintage 2012

Lower-than-average yields in Australia, as across much of Europe. This was blamed on high winds, drought and low fruitfulness resulting from the poor 2011 vintage. Quality, however, was much better than in the exceptionally damp 2011, with South Australia avoiding some of the weather extremes experienced by other states. Strong varietal typicality is a commonly cited feature of the 2012 crop.

Written Notes

A dark ruby red. Complex on the nose, this wine has notes of tobacco, slate, intense blackcurrant, wild thyme and cacao. Powerful on the palate, tasting predominantly of black fruits and liquorice, this wine has fine yet firm tannins that give way to a very long and classically structured finish. A precise and stylish cabernet sauvignon.

This is a blend of 91% cabernet sauvignon, 8% merlot and 1% cabernet franc from some of the oldest vines in the best parcels of the Wallcliffe and Trinders vineyards. Grapes were hand-picked during the perfect 2012 harvest and fermented on skins. The wine was aged for 18 months in French barriques (half new, half one year old) to bring out polished tannins and complexity.
