The Story

Barca Velha has been chosen numerous times by Portuguese bodies for official receptions of civilian, military and religious world dignitaries, including the Pope.

Vinified in the Quinta da Leda winery, using selected grapes mainly from this estate, but also from elevated areas in the Douro Superior. After destemming and gentle crushing, the grapes were put into stainless steel vats, where alcoholic fermentation took place. A long, gentle m...

Vintage 1983

Declared by most houses, 1983 was an exceptional vintage, with outstanding, powerful wines, it was unjustly overshadowed by the 1977s before and the 1985s which followed. Muscular wines with a great capacity for ageing they are often compared to the 1966s.

Written Notes

Top vintage for Barca Velha. Developed, clear, moderately intense tawny colour. The very complex medium-intense nose offers an extensive range of charming aromas. Ripe plums and violet aromas with figs and damsons enriched by leathery animal aromas with nuts, dark chocolate and a touch of tar. A fleshy full-bodied palate with tightly-knit fruitiness with firm, ripe, velvety tannins and great length. It is amazing how charming, youthful and intense this traditional and oxidatively vinified wine can be. Drinking perfectly now but it still has potential to age a few more years.

Ruby. Floral, cherries, touch of licorice, coffee and leather. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, quite mouthwatering and a red fruit nerve in the licorice finish.
