    My Column

    MY TOP WINES 2010

2017 is now firmly part of history and with 7826 wines tasted in 2017, it has been a busy year. But two wines have already seen 96 points in 2018! Highlights of the year other than specific wines?

-My first trip to the Rhône Valley, and my first really close look on several wines from this valley side by side. Some stunning stuff made here. I knew that from before, but I still get to taste very few of these lovelies.

-A brilliant trip to Douro, yes, I’ve been there before, but my is this place breathtaking!

-I was intronised as a Commander of the Order of Bontemps during Vinexpo, a huge honour, I am very grateful!

-Being quoted for the primeur campaign of estates like La Conseillante, Haut-Bailly, Pape Clemet and the other estates of Bernard Magrez, Lagrange, Belgrave and several others. I am humble and deeply honoured.

I am so thankful to all wine producers and wine collectors who open their doors and invite me in for fantastic tastings. It is a magic world to be taking part of.
No barrel samples from the lovely 2016 vintage of Bordeaux and Burgundy on this list, just because I just wanted bottled wines. Some stunning wines made in both regions.

    My Today

TOP 41 WINES from Bordeaux vintage 2015

The wines on this list is chosen for their believed future score and and thereafter in the order that I would like to buy them to have them in my collection (if I had money dripping from my finger tips) but there are, luckily, some wines on this list that are not overly expensive. After five hundred and fifty plus wines tasted of the 2015 vintage more or less everything there is to taste of names have been tasted, some, when in doubt about the sample has been tried again if possible. The wines are very good if maybe not at the level som have suggested. It does not rival 2010, not 2005 either. 2000, 2001 and 2014 in parts seems to be somewhere to put it, and 1985 has come to mind several times over with the pure fresh elegance and charm.

The wines are far more precise and concentrated than 1985 ever was, but the style seems similar. These are wine that will be very easy to enjoy with high quality and on a whole, the best vintage since 2010, especially on the Right Bank. Some excellent and superb wines in Pomerol, and a more fine grained and fine tuned and fresher, more brilliant style of Saint-Emilion. Left bank is more varied, Margaux and Saint-Julien the most homogenous. There are many great wines just off this list, these are the ones I expect to land at 95 score or higher. None at one hundred this time around. The wine are fragrant, red fruity, many has used everything they had of Cabernet Franc, so a violets note is quite typical, especially on the Right Bank.

1990 Château Montrose JUN 12 Deep ruby. Deep nose, minty, concentrated, massive, everything is packed in there, in glossy paper, but very hard to decipher. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, intense structure, still superb balance, mouthwatering, rich, like a ball, rolling over the palate, this bottle could be longer, and lacked even the faintest hint of any brett. Perfect bottles like this one should lie for another ten-to twenty years for assessment. 95

1990 Château Montrose MAY 12 Ruby, garnet rim. Decanted close to five hours. Intense nose, power, yet finesse. Overwhelming! Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, great balance, intense and so elegant, needs a lot more time, flirting, seductive and yet secretive and masculine, yet it feels open like a book, intriguing. Wow again. 1986 Chateau Montrose MAY 10 Deep ruby, ruby rim still, starts out with a mature nose, a bit lean, leather, stable, cigars, fresh and lively acidity, some tannins holding on in the finish. After 1, 5 hours in decanter, still mature, but so much more complex, cigars, coffee, leather, hay, tobacco, cedar, cherry stones, anise, tannins seems more mature, probably because there is so much more body and intensity going on, acidity seems even fresher, fleshy cherries, a mature 86, especially for a châteaux like Montrose, but still very enjoyable. Great finish. 92

1975 Château Montrose  DEC 14 Rubinrød, tegl kant. Lær, fiken, dadler, nesten mineralsk, detaljert, nyansert, flørtende duft. Frisk syre, modne tanniner, frisk, livlig, slankere frukt, detaljert, fortsatt stram, litt slankere flaske, fiken og kirsebærstein finish, lang. Nå-2020 93

1975 Château Montrose MAY 12 Bottom neck fill, ruby with garnet rim. Leather, cassis, bell peppers, licorice, morellos, sweet feel and elegant. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, leaner style yes, but elegant and long, lovely bottle. 92

1966 Château Montrose; SEP 10 (Magnum) A level fill, ruby with thin brick rim. First, slightly off, wondering if it was a bit corked. Later on, leather, black- and redcurrants, anise and prunes. Good acidity, ripe tannins, some metal touch, still felt a bit off, but too good to ignore...... The day after, much more complex and elegant on the nose, all signs of off aromas or cork gone, more leather, prunes, coffee, much more nuanced and rich. More complexity, but the structure started to tire and the tannins seemed a bit dry. Still very drinkable and a good wine. 84

1961 Château Montrose APR 15 In neck fill. Ruby, broad brick rim. Tobacco, exotic spices, plums, figs and some cassis. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, lively, fruity, red berries, detailed, nuanced, playful, lovely balance, refreshing. Long. Ever so slightly dry at it's very end. 94

1961 Château Montrose Apr 11 Ruby, orange rim. Figs, prunes, leather, somewhat dusty that never quite leaves. Fresh acidity, few tannins, some figs and prunes, drying a bit towards finish, good length. 88

1961 Chateau Montrose JAN 10 A bit deeper ruby with orange rim. A bit dusty, some leather, hay, fresh berries, cassis, stable and whiff of cigars. Kind of sweetish fruity attack, fresh acidity, great dark fruit, slightly metallic and drying a bit in the finish. 91

1959 Château Montrose MAY 15 Danish bottling, E. Troels-Smith, Copenhagen. Top shoulder fill. Ruby, brick rim. Leather, figs, mature, more evolved than last bottle, cedar, earthy nose. Fresh acidity, few tannins, some dark berries, sweet and sour, iodine and light metallic note before it actually ads some prunes in the finish. 91

1959 Château Montrose APR 15 Bottom neck fill. Ruby, thin brick rim. Tobacco, dark fruits, scented, figs and plums nose. Quite intense. Getting more detailed with air. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, ripe fruits, plums and figs but again this slight redcurrants touch, long. 95

1949 Château Montrose SEP 10 B/C level fill if I remember correctly, ruby with garnet rim and extreme sediments. Leather, cassis, cigars, tobacco, very fine and complex, very intense, even some coffee. Very pure, elegant, fresh acidity, ripe tannins, gorgeous texture body and length. Just a tiny metallic touch far back in the aftertaste. 95

1948 Château Montrose APR 15 A level fill. Ruby, thin orange rim. Dried fruits, cooked herbal notes, rubber, figs and dates, better with air. Fresh acidity, high of dry tannins, rustic, squared, drying finish, somewhat unbalanced. 82

1947 Château Montrose APR 15 B level fill. Ruby with brownish hue, orange rim. Caramel, dried and dusty nose. Fresher palate, fresh, leaner some red berries, but dries off in the finish. 85

1945 Château Montrose APR 15 C level fill, mid shoulder. Bright ruby, broad garnet rim. Figs, redcurrants, anise, leather, fruit driven, bright nose. Liquorice with more air. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, leaner, red fruits, detailed, nuanced, lively, leaner, same lively and playful red fruitiness of Ausone in the vintage and Pontet-Canet, have something similar. But it dies off after 45 minutes. 93

1934 Château Montrose APR 15 B level fill. Brown, brick rim. Oxidised nose, dried maderized palate.

1928 Château Montrose APR 15 Bottom neck fill, estate bottled. Reconditioned 1989. Ruby with broad mahogany rim. Figs, dates, cigars, faint minerals note, sweet tobacco, slight peppery note, evolving and adding all the time. Forest floor. Fresh acidity, few tannins, detailed, refreshing, nuanced, playful, lovely balance, long. 95

    Me

To me wine is one of the greatest and sometimes worst of the worlds greatest pleasures. When you get that one bottle, or even that one sip of a truly great wine, you're just lost. Wine can be almost everything, great pleasure, great fun, deeply tragic, complex, easy, boring, fresh, fantastic, but maybe the greatest of it all, floating history. Imagine drinking your birth year wine, you drink you're own age, and in a way your own life. Memories comes rushing back... Or what about drinking a 1945?

After the war was over and they were able to make some of the most legendary wines of all time. I am a wine fanatic, I have WSET Diploma in Wines and Spirits and have been inthroned as Commandeur de Bordeaux as well as Hospitalier d'Honneur of Pomerol, Gentilhomme d'Honneur du Duché de Fronsac and Prud'homme de la Jurade de Saint-Emilion. All views are my personal ones. I live in Norway, I'm a freelance wine writer and a wine educator and after several requests I have decided to write more English reviews and tasting notes. Please pardon my errors in a foreign language as some tastingnotes have been written quickly. Enjoy, and please ad comments of personal experiences.

    Digital Me

MY top wine moments of 2016.

It is a list, but it’s difficult to put it correctly, it’s more the first that springs to my mind thinking back on the year that has passed by.

    1. Just for the sheer pleasure and luxury of being able to follow and share one bottle of 1982 Château Mouton Rothschild over several hours with just one fellow drinker. A magnificent bottle, the best one I’ve had, opened randomly (word not chosen randomly) by itself. Normally these shows up at crazy tastings were one bottle overshadows another, and one just gets small sips as there are lots of people around the table. That is off course how many of us actually get to taste these expensive gems. Fantastic evening and night. The wine showed all exotic treats and layers one expects from it. 100

    2. A Vega Sicilia Vertical tasting in Helsinki, Finland with a total of 17 new vintages for me of Unico, stretching back to 1921. Some of the highlights of the evening were the 1946, 1964, 1986, 1996, 2002 vintages, with many runners up. We started the tasting with the 1964 as the host had read that some crazy Norwegian had given the wine a perfect score. I wonder who that could be?

    3. I have had this a few times now, and spotted this one quite quickly blind. The stunning 1970 Château Latour is a cathedral of a wine. So massively built, yet layers of fruit and complexity, stunning. Hugely impressive wine. 100

    4. Yes, I am a Mouton guy, always have loved the bold exotic expression, and here is another Mouton, 1986 Château Mouton Rothschild this time, opened in May. It needed four hours in decanter to run on all cylinders, but wow, then it ran smoothly. Layers of lush and pure fruit, incredible length. 100

    5. The only reason this isn’t further up is its youth. 2014 Comte Liger Belair La Romanée. WOW! The purity, the delicacy, the nuances, the layers, the playfulness, the brightness. It feels transparent until you try another great wine besides it, and it just runs over it. The length is amazing! Wish I could afford cases! 100

    6. 2000 Château Latour just left me dreaming. It is youthful still, but the layers and depth showing up in there is stunning. Refined and just ads on and on the more air one gives it. Amazing stuff. 99

    7. Three times 1916 Château Malartic Lagraviére. The bottles were opened at L’Academie du Vin dinner in Bordeaux. Two bottles fairly similar, one less so. To be able to have a go at bottle variations on a wine one hundred years old, that is just amazing! Best wine got 94!

    8. Getting a glass of 1996 Le Pin at Helsinki Airport. Not a producer I taste much, and not something I expect to find at an airport. The coravin system isn’t perfect, the wine seemed a little to evolved for its age, but anyways, quite a treat.

    9. Probably my most delicious sparkling this year. At the above mentioned Vega-Sicilia vertical, this 1975 Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill from magnum was poured. A subtle, refreshing, delicate, nuanced, lively and refined Champagne. Served blind, I was off quite a bit, I guessed 1988 Salon. Stunning once in a lifetime experience!

    10. The random moment, in the middle of the night, when I first get a 1938 Barros Colheita blind, and then a 1865 Niepoort Colheita. Let’s just say I was miles off both vintages blind! Both superb.

    11. A magnificent trip to Mosel in August arranged by the German Wine Institute. I had an excellent guide for two of the days with Slow Mosel, and fantastic visits in both vineyards and wineries up and down Saar, Ruwer and Mosel. Superb visits at Zilliken, Selbach-Oster, Dr.Pauly-Bergweiler, Vollenweider, Weiser-Künstler, Kettern and more. The trips organized by the German Wine Institute are always great experiences. I really fell back in love with Riesling on this trip to Mosel. Mosel made me fall in love with the variety, but I’m not as geared up for the love of the bone dry ones as many. My God have good a proper Kabinett can be!

    12. A trip to Douro, tasting lots of beautiful wines, young and old. Having some excellent food in Porto, and beautiful Colheitas from Kopke in the vintages 1938 and 1935. But the vitality of the 1917 Barros Rich Tawny probably sticks to my mind the most.

    13. A week in Romania was an eye-opener. It changed my view on an entire country, as well as on their wines. There might be some future stars here.

    14. Getting to taste a massive amount of wines from Albert Bichot as they let me sniff and taste around their cellars for three days. Including some very rare birds like the 300 bottles production of Richebourg! Amazed at their generosity.

    15. Going to Grand Jours de Bourgogne with a fairly crazy fellow Norwegian dreaming of buying a castle so he could throw burning oil on visitors he didn’t like. Rarely have I laughed as hard and as much, at the same time as there were so many stunning wines on display, ready to be tasted. It was some fantastic days in Burgundy.

There were many more fantastic wine moments in 2016, as well as the loss of some wine friends. It’s been a roller coaster of a year, with lots of emotions. Can’t wait to see what 2017 will bring. Oh shit, I forgot a pretty interesting Marques de Riscal vertical going back to 1910…..

Krug Vintage 1929 / 100 points / Best mature Champagne I have ever had! Served blind. Roasted almonds, nuts, brioche, intense, smoky notes, almonds, hazelnuts, dried fruits, so detailed, yellow oxidative apples picked from the ground, nuanced. Amazing nose. Leaps out of the glass. Floral notes and some fine caramel hints with more air, peach, layered, you could smell it all night, especially since it was enjoyed next to Beethoven's moonshine sonata, played on the most magnificent Steinway.
Fresh acidity, so detailed, intense, nuanced, bright fruit, perfect balance, such smoothness, fruit stones, minerals, chalky, layered, gorgeous, absolute perfection. Many young wines promises perfection, this has kept that promise, quoting Markus del Monego MW.

Christer Byklum/ BWW2024 Finalist, Wine Writer (Norway)  had a tasting of  60 Wines  from  57 Producers

BORDEAUX 2022 / TOP 60 WINES / Château Angelus 2022 Ruby. Blackberries, anise, dark fruits, a gentler and dare I say more feminine nose, floral notes from a summers breeze, nuanced, you have to look for all the details, they do not come jumping out at you.
Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, superb texture, such finesse and details, bright, energetic, layered, pH 3,65, smooth and velvety, it comes back at you in waves, long finish. Layered, detailed and nuanced. Not the easiest to read, it seems light yet it has enough effortless concentration to hide 14,5% alcohol completely. The gentle giant.
