The Story

Rayne Vigneau has all the excellent qualities of a legendary fine wine. Classified 1st growth in the famous 1855 classification, the domain is also renowned for its precious soil that abounds in precious stones. This Sauternes has a particularly intense style, fresh with a long finish on the palate. Rayne Vigneau is a wine that contains amazing freshness, to drink young or to keep in the cellar.

Château de Rayne Vigneau is one of the benchmarks of this appellation.

Vintage 2020

In Bordeaux, the heat led to early flowering. Additionally, this led to an early harvest after a very hot summer. As a starting point, there is great maturity in the grapes, and we can expect a more opulent vintage than in recent years.

This year's summer was the hottest since 1959, but the rain fell at just the right time during the growing season. The harvest took place two weeks before the norm and will produce grapes with high alcohol potential and the lowest acidity since the 2003 vintage. As they say in Bordeaux: “It was a good and extreme growing season which , hopefully, also produces great wines.”

Written Notes

Rayne Vigneau GCC - 76% Semillon + 24% Sauvignon Blanc. This property has produced excellent wines in recent vintages, and its 2020 fitted almost perfectly in the description. Splendid intensity on nose and palate, flair, elegance and precision, fine acidity. Delicate sweetness and complexity. Lingering aftertaste. Classy but lighter than usual. 93p.

Full bottle 1,255 g. Undated cask sample. 70% Sémillon, 30% Sauvignon Blanc. Yield 16 hl/ha. Grapes are vinified in new barrels. Once fermentations are over, musts are settled and stabilised and aged in barrel for 18 months.
Deep copper colour. A little brûlée on the nose but quite fragile. Big, bold, round and sweet on the front palate and then lightly burnt note on the finish with a hint of burnt pineapple. Some energy in this but there is also some stickiness rather than botrytis.

  • 88p

Bright golden colour. Expressive nose with aroma reminiscent of dried apricots, candied Angelica, tangerine peel and hints of mild spices with a distinct whiff of vanilla. On the palate well structured with typical Botrytis character, opulent sweetness, however fresh with fine acidity and excellent length.
