The Story

Jacques Reynaud, who died in 1997, was one of the true characters in Châteauneuf. A notoriously shy and private man, he was known to avoid appointments by hiding in ditches that lined the rutted driveway leading to his château. However, he was recognised as one of the world's greatest winemakers and the legacy of Château Rayas is now continued by his son François.

So many practices here seem to run contrary to other producers in Châteauneu...

Written Notes

The 2007 bowled us over with its sexy perfume. It was rich and full-bodied with much more acidity than the first two wines, and Emmanuel agreed. This was super impressive with so much more oil in the mouth. “SO RICH,” I wrote. The 2006 had the sweetest nose, but it showed a little dryly on the palate. There was more strawberry to it, and it showed a lot like the ’08 but with more acid

Good looking normal size bottle and in an perfect condition. Colour is cherry red, and looking clear and medium. On the nose it is mature, seductive and complex. The taste is elegant, voluptuous, round, and dry, high alcohol content, with medium tannin, with silky tannins, and average in acidity and with balanced structure. On the palate it is layered and has earthy, chocolate, mineral, licorice, pepper, coffee and floral flavours. The finish is long and spicy. This wine is excellent. I paid around 500-1k€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 1-5 years and decant at least 45min before tasting. Too expensive for quality. I do not recommend it. Good vintage of a wine already evolved, perhaps in the descent phase.
