The Story

The Barossa is a truly unique part of the Australian wine industry and the Château is one of the most established names in the Barossa.

All our premium wines are uncrushed, basket pressed and unfiltered with minimal intervention to allow the true character of the grapes to express themselves. The combination of traditional methods with the best technology creates an elegance and softness typical of our wines.

The Barossa is home to some of the oldest vines in the world. Our Centenarians are a truly unique opportunity to experience wines made from vines aged between 100 and 165 years old. With power and fortitude these vines stand, having survived drought, frost and heat. These wines are only produced in minute quantities due to the scarcity of such ancient vines.

The grapes are handpicked from a one acre vineyard of vines over 100 years old and placed uncrushed into small stainless steel open fermenters. Gentle basket pressing occurs in one single press. Aging takes place for 18 months in a combination of new (30%) and old (70%) French oak puncheons.

Wine Information

Dating back pre-1917, these vines were planted around the time of the establishment of Chateau Tanunda itself. They are from a time before the two world wars, before the Great Depression, and many planted as a response to worldwide demand after the Phylloxera outbreak in France. This was a pre-mechanized and pre-irrigation era where the site selection was everything. The vines are dry-grown as bush vines with only the best soils, vine material and sites surviving the first years, and only the absolute pinnacle surviving the 100 years thereafter.

They are survivors that produce tiny yields of high-quality fruit, grown with minimal vineyard intervention and peerless in most of the wine world.
