The Story

Grapes for our Syrah are grown on our Diamond Pile Estate vineyards in the Sonoma Coast region. Specifically, these vineyards are located in the newest AVA, the Petaluma Gap which takes its name from the cooling afternoon breezes that funnel through the area. The winds drop temperatures and help create a long growing season. Our Syrah thrives in this environment, benefitting from a slow and even ripening that delivers bold, flavorful fruit and balanced acidity.

Grapes were handpicked, destemmed without being crushed, and transferred to our fermentors. The must began to ferment with native yeast within 48 hours of crushing. Wine was pumped-over two to three times a day to maximize fruit and color extraction. Fermentation was kept at a moderately warm temperature and the must was pressed shortly after the wine went dry. The wine was racked once and then moved on to French oak with a medium toast level for aging.

Vintage 2018

Seamless season of heavenly hangtime and phenomenal phenolic development

February saw abundant rains, followed by lots of filtered light in spring and early summer. Both bud break and flowering occurred a bit late, but under ideal weather conditions, creating plentiful and even fruit set. Summer brought generous sun during the day and cooler marine influences, virtually uninterrupted by major heat spikes. The relatively mild summer followed by extended fall sunshine and moderate heat created near-ideal conditions for winemakers to allow their fruit to accumulate flavor complexity with gradual increases in sugar levels. Volume is looking great, up 20-30% increase over average crop quantity.

Written Notes

Deep, intense ruby red colour. Pronounced broad nose with toasty spiciness – smoke and rubber. Lovely ripe blackberry and blueberry notes. Fullbodied palate is smooth and velvety with spicy and warming mouthfeel. Very ripe black fruit and supple tannins are escorting smoothly the long and lingering spicy finish. The wine benefitted from 10 hours decanting by showing more balance in overwhelming aromas. Drink now and serve at 16-17C. Perfect match with game birds with bacon and lentils. – JL 88p (4/2020)
