The Story

The name of Clos du Marquis, created in 1902, was inspired by the Petit Clos adjacent to the Château de Léoville, residence of the Marquis de Las Cases. The Clos du Marquis is produced from top terroirs of the Saint-Julien Appellation that were not part of the old Domaine de Léoville cadastre. These terroirs are located slightly to the west and are surrounded by prestigious Classified Growths, particularly Seconds Crus Classés of Saint-Julien ...

Vintage 2015

Full report of Bordeaux 2015 by Andrew Caillard MW “Next in line in a great series of vintages; 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2015.

2015 is a wonderful Bordeaux vintage without the hype or hysteria associated with 2009 and 2010. The wines are generally expressive and generous with wonderful concentration and structure. Given another year in barrel, the wines should gain more complexity and fruit volume. Châteaux, in all sub-regions, are e...

Written Notes

The 2015 Clos du Marquis is powerful and dense from the outset. Inky blue/purplish fruit, licorice, spice, lavender and licorice are all pushed forward in this decidedly plush, voluptuous Saint-Julien. Firm tannins give the wine explosive energy that carries through to the persistent finish. From barrel, the 2015 was much more forward, but from bottle my impression is that it is going to need at least a few years to be at its very best. There is a good bit of polish here that just needs time to fully emerge.

Rich and dense, with a fresh beam of mesquite, savory and tea streaking through the red and black currant preserve flavors. Shows good brambly energy through the finish, revealing a tug of licorice snap at the end.

Dark purple red colour with violet hue and almost black core. Well structured but quite closed nose. Hints of incense and oak spices, in the background prunes and red berries, hints of vanilla and mild spices. On the palate well structured with good balance, fine tannins and acidity, excellent fruit in the finish. A wine demanding more time to open up but displaying a promising potential.

Medium deep colour. Liquorice blackcurrant aromas with graphite notes. Plush sweet fruited wine with dense blackcurrant mulberry fruits, fine looseknit grainy tannins and fresh new oak notes. Finishes firm chocolaty. Finishes slinky dry and long. Lovely richness and depth. Plenty of extract but well balanced.  95 points
