The Story

From Cramant to Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, through Avize and Oger but also Chouilly and Oiry: all are found in the Côte des Blancs. Its location is one of Delamotte’s richest assets. The chalky soil, the flora and the sloping vineyards give the grapes their exceptional character, delivering delicate, consistent champagnes. Championing this exceptional terroir, drawing the best from it while maintaining absolute respect for the vines and the environme...

Vintage 2012

The next most exceptional vintage since 2008. A truly difficult growing season saw severe frosts in the winter. March brought warmth but early budbreak made the vines vulnerable to spring frosts. Overall, the early growing season was wet, and mildew became a serious issue. However, conditions improved dramatically in the later summer months. An August heatwave resulted in a rapid accumulation of sugar, but fortunately the nights remained cool,...

Written Notes

Fine bubble stream. White gold, in color. Sliced pear, apple, lemon, tangerine juice, freshly baked brioche, citrus peel, mineral, chalk. Vibrant, youthful, creamy, warm brioche, on the finish. Still going to give this 10 more years to develop.

This mouthwatering version is fine and satiny in texture, featuring citrus peel acidity that frames a well-meshed range of crushed currant, Earl Grey tea and lemon curd flavors, with a rich hint of toasted brioche. The minerally underpinning echoes on the finish.

Vintage follows on from the highly successful 2008. Next vintage will be 2014 to be released end of 2021. Six grands crus: Oger, Le Mesnil, Avize, Cramant, Oiry and Chouilly (the last two newish and included only from 2008 but apparently this did not increase volume of production). This blend was Didier Depond's dream. Alain (ex chef de cave) said Chouilly grapes not perfect for Delamotte. Perhaps the only house to blend all six of these Côte des Blancs grands crus. Aged seven years on lees. Didier says it can age for ages. And recommends with chicken as well as fish. Dosage 5 g/l.
Quite deep greenish gold. Tight bead. Relatively rich, mature nose. Again, as with the NV Blanc de Blancs, the dosage is perceptible – not sickly but this champagne is definitely sweeter than many I taste today. Friendly, delicately textured champagne. Not desperately persistent. But a very satisfactory food partner with sashimi. Nice spine.
