The Story

Clos de Vougeot is the largest single vineyard in the Cote de Nuits entitled to the grand cru designation. It was once known the flagship vineyard for the Cisterican monks, who built a stone wall surrounding its borders. In the early 2000s, it was split among more than 80 owners. Domaine Chanson's parcel is ideally located in the heart of the vineyard, close to the Chateau de Clos de Vougeot. Clos de Vougeot wines are typically dense when young, and robust rather than elegant in style.

Wine Information

After a very cold winter and a cold spring, the weather at the start of summer was quite demanding. It became fine again in the second half of August with hot temperatures. The harvest commenced early September under a bright sunshine. The combination of all those climatic factors has engendered a significant drop of the yields but quality is there. Meticulous vinifications have produced wines with very pure aromas and a very fresh structure. Aging in oak casks during 15 months.

Dark ruby color. Intense aromas of black fruit mixed with leather and spices on a hint of vanilla. Powerful, complex and dense. Silky texture. Elegant oak note and well crafted tannins. Very pure fruit. Outstanding persistence.

Vintage 2012

2012 was beset by unusual weather that didn’t spare the vines! A mild winter, spring-like March, cool spring with frosts, summer-like May, cooler, wetter June, a variable summer with heatwaves, hail and storms… Because of the cold damp spring, some of the vine flowers didn’t set and form fruit, there was millerandage (where the flowers aren’t fully fertilised and give small berries) and high pressure from mildew and odium. Temperatures went right up during the short periods, over-heating and scorching the berries. This weather caused a significant fall in yields, without, however, impacting on the quality of the grapes, as well spread out bunches with small berries guarantee concentration and intensity.
All in all, the grapes achieved good ripeness in aromas and good sugar to acidity balance. The white wines are characterised by their finesse and concentration. The reds set themselves apart with their lovely colours, ripe and silky tannins and their harmonious mouthfeel
