Wine Information

Domaine de Trevallon

The Domaine de Trevallon wine estate is located in Saint-Etienne-du-Grès, in the Bouches-du-Rhône on the northern slopes of the Alpilles. The vines, growing amidst holm oaks, olive and almond trees, blend harmoniously into this enchanted scrub landscape.
The Domaine de Trevallon is now so well-known that it is easy to forget that it is not that long ago since it was founded. Eloi Dürrbach, one of the pioneers of the wine-growing renaissance that took place in the region around Les Baux, planted the first vines in the Alpilles in 1973.
In 1955, when Eloi’s father bought the Trevallon farmhouse surrounded by 60 hectares of scrubland, nothing grew there – there was nothing but rock.

”My golden rule is to interfere as little as possible with the wine. First of all, the grapes must have lots of taste and the soil should be nourished organically. We do not nourish the plant but the soil. We don't use any pesticides, or insecticides. The same goes for making the wine in the cellar. It is best to do as little as possible. So, we don't stick to any specifications but rather follow Nature's lead, upstream, insofar as concerns the vines, and then, in the cellar, we proceed according to the conditions of the year's harvest. If you depend too much on technology, you get a uniform, standardised taste." – Eloi Dürrbach

The Domaine de Trevallon brought out new labels for the 1996 vintage. They are the work of René Dürrbach, Eloi Dürrbach's father, who died in Year 2000 at the age of 89. René Dürrbach, the painter and sculptor, was friends with many artists, including Fernand Léger, Robert Delaunay and Pablo Picasso. Each year one of his label designs that relates in some way to the characteristics of that year's wine, is chosen. These labels are a tribute to Eloi’s father, who played such an important part in establishing the vines at Trevallon.
