The Story

About Clos de la Roche: This formidable Grand Cru has always been the standard bearer of Domaine Lignier. This is a complete wine marked by somber black fruits and firm yet subtle tannins; it has exceptional breed and fine aging potential. The Ligniers own one hectare in Clos de la Roche. The vines are between 32 and 42 years old (as of 2012).

Vintage 1993

In Burgundy 1993, an early flowering in the month of June, was followed by a wet early July before a hot dry August. The reds of 1993 are outstanding. They are powerful and concentrated with a firm backbone of ripe tannins. The whites although austere to begin with and slow to evolve have developed into magnificent well structured, powerful wines. A vintage that produced wines built for ageing.

Once again, expectations were high in Burgundy...

The 1993 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche was called in as an audible by Bijan since his Meurgers was corked, delivered fresh off the van from Acker on 72nd Street.  I didn’t take many notes at this point, but I did note that it was spectacular.  It was easily in my top three wines for the evening, which was no easy task.  Wow (97+).
