Vintage 2015

The 2015 Harvest by Clive Coates MW

The bad news is Chablis. In the early hours of Tuesday 1st September a severe storm hit the Chablis area. From Irancy up to the grands crus of Blanchots and Les Clos a swathe of hail – some hailstones as large as golf balls – has affected some 100 hectares of the vineyard. In all 97 mm of rain fell in six hours. The weather then cleared, threatening rot, and most growers rushed out to harvest before it wa...

Written Notes

As is often the case at this early stage, this is quite backward and restrained and indeed the nose is all but mute. There is excellent mid-palate concentration to the lush yet serious and powerful medium weight plus flavors that deliver first-rate length on the balanced finish. In contrast to the prior wines that could be approached on the young side if desired, here I would suggest allowing this at least a few years first as it's quite tightly wound at present. Note that this too possesses outstanding quality for its level.

An always upbeat Patrick Javillier succinctly described 2015 as a "much less challenging vintage than the last several as the growing season was largely without concern save for a bit of early season oidium. The summer was hot and dry and this obviously contributed greatly to the high, but not extreme, ripeness levels. We chose to begin picking on the 28th of August with the Clos du Cromin and brought in exceptionally clean fruit that averaged around 13% in terms of potential alcohols. Yields were also, for once, normal so anytime that you can get reasonable volumes of fruit that is both clean and ripe, you have to consider that a victory. As to the wines, they have a bit less acidity than their 2014 counterparts yet even so they are remarkably well-balanced. Moreover, contrary to what some people seem to think, we find that the terroir transparency is actually quite good. One other positive is that I doubt that the 2015s will close up the way that the 2014s did after they were bottled and thus my sense is that they will drink well all their lives." The 2015 whites were bottled between October 2016 and January 2017. I would add that Javillier rarely misses these days and his 2015s are excellent.
