Wine Description
The Story
Since 1988 they produce nearly every year a Vinothekfüllung of Grüner Veltliner, which has been accompanied by a Riesling since 2000. Both of the Vinothekfüllungen could be defined as dry Auslesen but sweet Auslesen and Prädikatswein also count among the Knolls’ repertoire, and one should certainly sample these essences.
Annual production: 500 cases
Vinothekfüllung bottling combines selected fruit from their Kreutles, Loibenberg, and Kellerberg plantings of Grüner Veltliner, resulting in a particularly intense, earthy expression of Austria’s favorite grape.
The flagship grape of Austria, Grüner Veltliner is a natural cross of Traminer and St. Georgen. Grüner accounts for almost 30% of all grapes planted with around 13,500 hectares under vine in the country. The Austrian native has become an international sensation amongst sommeliers worldwide as the perfect food wine due to its high acidity. In Austria it is prized for the easy drinking wine it produces but can also wow the palate with complexity in the right winemaker’s hands.
Wine Information
"We have never seen as dry period as in 2017 from January to July," says Emmerich Knoll Senior says and refers to his 50 year tracking records. "The leaves turned yellow or even brown already in June. It was the rain in the middle of August that rescued the vintage. After that, the temperatures went down and the night temperatures were cool, which finally gave elegant and fruity wines with refreshing acidity levels. To be honest, during the summer, neither we nor our colleagues thought 2017 would give so beautiful wines at the end. Especially Riesling kept its acidity incredibly high, with two grams per liter more than Grüner Veltliner. I have to say, we are very happy with the 2017 vintage."
