Written Notes

The 1851 vintage in the Douro Valley came from a period when Port production relied entirely on traditional viticulture and foot-treading in granite lagares. Weather conditions during the growing season were generally favourable, allowing grapes to ripen fully across many prime vineyard sites of the Douro. Wines from this era were typically robust and structured, and the rare surviving bottles demonstrate the remarkable longevity of nineteenth-century Vintage Port.

Deep mahogany with amber-green reflections, showing the extraordinary age of this historic wine. The bouquet is intensely complex, offering aromas of dried fig, date and black raisin layered with walnut, molasses and antique wood, alongside hints of balsamic, spice and old leather. On the palate the wine is silky and beautifully integrated, revealing flavours of caramelised nuts, dark toffee, prune and preserved black fruits. Gentle acidity supports the lingering sweetness, leading to an exceptionally long, contemplative finish marked by cedar, spice and aged balsamic complexity. A rare and remarkable nineteenth-century Vintage Port.
