The Story

Grape Variety    100% Shiraz
Vineyard Soils    Loam over clay (Nuriootpa)
Vine Age    Shiraz planted in 1893
GI    Barossa Valley
Summary

After sharing another season with her soul mate, the sun, the Old Bastard Shiraz vines 119th anniversary was pure    and perfect. Old Bastard was first released in 1998.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-picked and sourced from Shiraz vines planted in 1893.

Matured for 21 months in 35% new and the remainder in 1 year old French oak. The wine making procedure is a    closely guarded secret, with innovative techniques as yet revealed to new world wine.

Colour

Crimson and garnet, with a dark edge.

Nose

Immediately fresh. Raspberries, blueberries and strawberries straight off the bush, braced with rhubarb.

Palate

Blackberry and mulberry. The maturation has imbedded the wine with spice, anise and cardamom. The tannin is talc, fine and delicate. The acid is pronounced but not sour and binds the tannin up leaving a tangy, pure exit.

Notes

The berry flavours become more pronounced as times etches this wine into the future. It has decades to give.

Vintage 2002

Australia 2002 was a cold year with plenty of winter and spring rain to support the vines for the year. Summer and fall were completely dry. The summer was the coldest on record. Fall had one of the warmest endings. All of this meant that we had very low yields of grapes and produced high quality wines. The grapes had a very good scent (nose and taste, more floral than usual), good concentration and good acidity. A great year for whites and maybe a few reds. However, it was important to pick the grapes very ripe and keep the nitrogen to a minimum.
