Hunting Hill is a vineyard that was first planted in 1982 and became a significant part of the original Kumeu River Chardonnay blend. Occupying the slope overlooking Mate’s Vineyard, it has always contributed lovely ripe and rich fruit to the Estate Chardonnay. Hunting Hill was replanted in 2000 and is now even better than before, giving beautifully ripe fruit with a distinctive mealy minerality.
A beautifully composed and terroir-driven Chardonnay from one of New Zealand’s benchmark producers, the 2023 Hunting Hill is defined by clarity, minerality and precision. The nose opens with bright aromas of lemon zest, green apple and white peach, complemented by subtle florals, honeyed brioche and a touch of sea spray.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a fine, chalky texture and vibrant natural acidity. Citrus and orchard fruit are beautifully delineated, underscored by a pronounced mineral thread that gives the wine energy and focus. Fine lees complexity adds a creamy layer without detracting from the wine’s tension and purity.
The finish is long, crisp and mineral-infused, with lingering citrus peel, wet stone and gentle spicy nuance. A refined and age-worthy Chardonnay that balances freshness with depth.
