Delighted by my correct analysis of his '69, Monsieur Barbier sent a runner off to fetch something even older. Nineteen fifty-nine is a legendary vintage that was strongly influenced by a very warm summer. The elegance and freshness weren't so tangible as in the '69, but the power and weight were magnificent. Nor does top-class Chardonnay ever feel clumsy. Legras's example exhibited a remarkably broad, aromatic spectrum, with clearly definable tones of chocolate, nuts, vanilla, coffee, and honeysuckle.
