The Story

Blend: Vidiano 100% (single-vineyard 'Ippodromos')

Origin: Single-vineyard "Ippodromos", Panorama area, central Crete (southeast orientation)

Soil: Clay

The “Ippodromos” vineyard lies on the top of a mountainside, at an altitude of 610m, on rocky clay soil. Cordon trained and spur pruned vines are not irrigated. The yield is 110 hl/ha The very promising Cretan grape variety Vidiano, brings out exceptionally its distinctive characteristics when grown on the “Ippodromos” vineyard.

The grapes are harvested in the night under the full moon of August. One third of the crop was selected lagging clusters on lateral shoots and were vinified in whole bunches in reductive "Perle" barrels (400 litre French oak with special closure that keeps CO2 inside) for 3 months. The rest of the grapes were macerated 12 hours before spontanous fermentation took place in new French oak barrels. After 25 days fermentation, the wine ws aged for two more months in the barrels.

Written Notes

Full bottle 1,311 g. Vegan-friendly. Dry-farmed in Panorama, central Crete, at 610 m. TA 5.1 g/l, pH 3.33. Macerated on skins for 12 hours then spontaneously fermented in new and 3-year-old French oak. Malo and a further three months in barrel.
Creamy, lightly spicy, stony citrus and pear with a lovely tangy citrus top note. Melon, too. The oak notes are subtle but add complexity and texture to the already complex fruit flavours. The oak is more evident on the palate in spice, hazelnut and a creamy roundness to balance the acidity. A multi-faceted and complete wine with great length. Shows the potential of this indigenous variety in the right hands. Delicious, persistent and likely to age well. A fine wine
