The Story

Nashwauk vineyard overlooks the coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula & the township of McLaren Vale. The vineyard takes its name from a ship, the Nashwauk, which was wrecked off the nearby coast on May 13th 1855.

The close proximity of the Nashwauk vineyard to the Gulf of St Vincent and the resultant cooling afternoon sea breezes means this variety enjoys relatively even ripening conditions and facilitates the development of optimum levels of flavour, colour and tannin.

Winemaking: Fruit was machine harvested at night, then batches fermented individually. Minimal skin contact at ferment and light pressing is used to maximise vineyard identities. Wine was in barrel for 15 months in 20% new French oak and the balance 3 & 4 year old barrels. No fining or filtration.

Production: 1,200 dozen produced

Tasting notes:

Colour: Dark Cherry / Bright as Ruby’s in its youth.

Nose: Aromas of black plums canned black cherries and blueberry spring from the glass.

Palate: The palate displays fine tannins with focussed dark fruits, hints of mocha and chocolate from the use of fine French oak.

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is ruby red and deep. On the nose it is youthful, fresh, round and generous. The taste is focused, refined, robust, ripe, fruity, with silky tannins, and average in acidity, full-bodied, with balanced, well-structured, concentrated structure and youthful. On the palate it is layered and has blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, spice, pepper and perfumed flavours. The finish is long, lingering, pure and vibrant. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 1-5 years and decant at least 1h before tasting.
