Each year, we choose only the most distinct small lots of fruit grown in the red rocky soil of our vineyard on Pritchard Hill, we choose just the best barrels and blend them together to create the new vintage of OVID. Napa Valley. The wine is a blend of the four Bordeaux varietals grown here: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, varying in proportion from year-to-year but always eloquently conveying this special place.
We produce four distinct red wine bottlings from our 15-acre estate vineyard: our flagship OVID. Napa Valley wine (Cabernet Sauvignon), Hexameter (Cabernet Franc), Loc. Cit. (produced from two adjacent blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon) and our estate Syrah. In addition, we also craft our “Experiment” wines each year – always different in their origins, blends, varietals and winemaking practices.
This natural predetermination was particularly potent in 2015, the seaso n that followed three years of drought in California. With naturally limited resources, Ovid’s vines produce d less than ha lf of our historical average. Though the vines produced FEWER BERRIES PER CLUSTER, cleverly they were BEAUTIFULLY LONG & LOOSE clusters–ideal for ensuring uniform ripening and exposure. A temperate summer gently ripened this fruit , extending harvest into the last week of Septemb er. And wh ile small in volume, the resulting wines from this vintage are WRIT LARGE–fresh, vibrant and utterly compelling.
