The Story

Wines from hillsides of Promontory reflect the many aspects of the territory: the native forests, the moisture of the ephemeral fog, and the minerality of the geologic underpinnings. These disparate facets in symphony provide a natural balance of freshness, energy, and tannin. We believe these traits, in wine, are the building blocks of great vitality and long life.

In an unmarked territory, concealed in the southwestern hills bordering Oak...

Written Notes

Features a warm, plush, forward, fruit-driven profile, with waves of fig, blackberry and black currant preserves nicely melded together. Full-bodied and massively concentrated, yet has stunning balance as well as polished, silky tannins. Needs time, but this should turn out to be incredibly nuanced and long lived!

This is a red with such incredible depth and beauty with a tannin structure that just melts into the glass. It’s full body, yet extremely tense and perfectly succulent. Hints of bitter lemon, cedar and dark berry. Pine needle and spice with fresh mushroom. It’s reserved and wonderful. Tension and focus. First vintage aged in all cask. Impressive now but one for the cellar. New classic for Napa. Better after 2022.

This is well-built but stays restrained in style, featuring alluring cassis and blackberry flavors, lined with black tea, minerally iron and warm tobacco accents. A late flash of warm paving stone adds depth and range through the long finish.

Dark, deep purple colour. Intense jammy nose with herbs, blackberries and toasty spiciness. Full-bodied, explosive palate shows vibrant fruitiness, subtle spiciness and silky smooth tannic structure. Lingering long finish shows vibrant energy and fireworks. Perfect to drink already but will evolved well in next 5-10 years. Perfect wine for Elk Tournedos. JL 98p (12/2020)

I knew it was only a matter of time before Davide Cilli would make a wine at Promontory that would represent the maximum expression of this rugged hillside site. The 2014 Promontory has been exceptional in the past, but it has also gained another gear or two over the last year, which is pretty much now standard for these wines. Stunningly delineated and precise, with tremendous purity and exceptional balance, the 2014 Promontory dazzles from start to finish. This is an especially translucent style, one that is more about persistence and balance than power alone. Stated simply, the 2014 Promontory is towering achievement from one of Napa Valley's most talented young winemakers. Kudos to the Harlan family and the winegrowing team led by Bob Levy and Cory Empting for creating the framework that allowed Cilli to craft this exquisite, riveting Cabernet Sauvignon.
