The Story

This iconic Douro property is recorded as far back as 1565.  In the early 19th century the quinta was acquired by António Bernard Ferreira, a well known Port grower and businessman, who began a programme of building and landscaping on an unprecedented scale.  Old stone walled terraces were repaired and new ones created, bringing approximately 100 hectares under vine of the 325 (803 acre) hectare property.  An adega was built to match the scale...

Vintage 2016

The 2016 harvest in the Douro brought perfectly-timed rain that turned a good year into a great one. Fortunately, despite a challenging growing season and a much adjusted and delayed picking schedule, those producers with excellent vineyard knowledge and confident decision-making, were rewarded with spectacular Vintage Ports.

Written Notes

A Quinta which dates back to 1565, the grapes receive 100% foot-treading. Dense black/purple colours. Lifted aromas of dark fruits, blackberries, black olives. Very well structured, with serious length, a hint of early sweetness and power. Classic. In great years such as 2016, there is also an extremely rare Capela da Quinta do Vesuvio. ‘16 is just the third, but I have never seen it nor heard from anyone who has. 95.

Densely packed, with lots of warmed fig, mulled blueberry, açai berry and blackberry paste flavors rolling through, scored with graphite and tar notes, carrying through a finish that has a smoldering feel. A long licorice snap echo adds a lip-smacking hint. Best from 2035 through 2055.

The 2016 Quinta do Vesuvio from Symington’s has a slightly more savoury bouquet than its fellow 2016 releases – earthier, almost nuttier with some lovely grilled walnut scents percolating through with time in the glass. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry, notes of marmalade and dried quince infusing the cassis and black cherry fruit with high notes of blueberry and a slight saline tincture towards the well balanced, quite persistent finish. Very fine.
