The Story

“First and foremost, I will be perpetuating the fresh, delicate style of wine that has been the Screaming Eagle hallmark since 1992. Across two winemakers before me (Heidi and Andy), that style has stayed remarkably consistent, which is part of the uniqueness of this ranch. The character of the vineyard really asserts itself. What will be new is the discovery of the young vine plots, and the ways that we can farm them individually to get the b...

Written Notes

Appearance: Opaque ruby-black with a saturated core and vivid purple rim; exceptional density and clarity.

Nose: Profound, precise, and effortlessly layered. Intense yet refined aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry are lifted by violet, lavender, and subtle sage. Underlying notes of graphite, crushed stone, and iron add depth and definition, while impeccably judged oak contributes hints of cedar, cocoa powder, sweet tobacco, and exotic spice. The bouquet is powerful but never overt, marked by purity and restraint.

Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and seamlessly composed. The palate delivers extraordinary concentration with a sense of weightlessness—pure dark fruit framed by vibrant acidity and ultra-fine, satin-textured tannins. The mid-palate is expansive and multidimensional, revealing layers of cassis, black tea, mineral tones, and delicate savory nuances. Balance is immaculate, with no single element dominating.

Finish: Exceptionally long and refined, tapering slowly with dark fruit, floral lift, graphite, and a lingering, mouthwatering freshness.

Overall: A transcendent Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, uniting power, finesse, and absolute precision. Screaming Eagle 2021 is both monumental and graceful, already breathtaking yet unquestionably destined for long-term evolution in the cellar.

Serving: 16–18°C. Decanting recommended (2–3 hours) in youth to fully express aromatic and textural depth.

Pairing: Simply prepared prime beef, lamb, venison, or refined game dishes; best enjoyed with minimal distraction.

Drinking window (estimate): 2028–2060+.

Screaming Eagle 2021 / The aromatics on this are stunning, offering black cherries, blackcurrants, lead pencil, spearmint, Spanish cedar. and wild roses. It’s medium-bodied and starts slowly on the palate and then takes off with muscular tension. Nicely chewy, toned and firm. Goes on for minutes. Flexing and showing its propensity for longevity. Rock on. Best after 2028 and beyond.
