Robert Parker's Wine Advocate / Very deep garnet-purple colored, the 2013 Second Flight simply sings of spiced blueberries, black forest cake and preserved plums with suggestions of star anise, baker’s chocolate, fertile loam and dried Provence herbs with a hint of lavender. Big, concentrated, full-bodied and packed to the gills with black fruits, exotic spice and floral layers, it has a firm frame of grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with epic length and loads of layers. Still very taut, it needs at least another 2-3 years in bottle. Interestingly, this full-on hedonistic vintage has one of the largest Merlot contributions ever for this wine: 65% Merlot with 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Cabernet Franc.

Rating: 96+

The Story

Second Flight is part and parcel of Screaming Eagle; the wines express that signature freshness so typical of the estate and will age for many years regardless of the composition.  Second Flight is in fact rarer than Screaming Eagle, producing only 500-800 cases a year.

One of the first actions taken by Kroenke, the sole owner of Screaming Eagle,  was to introduce a second wine, Second Flight, a premeditated attempt to solidify Screaming Eagle’s Romanee-Conti-esque legendary status. Second Flight’s debut vintage was the 2006, which released in 2012. The Wine Advocate immediately scored both this and the 2007 94 points. Like Screaming Eagle each bottle has a bubble coded security system, which allows the consumers to immediately verify the authenticity of this prized possession

Written Notes

Medium-intense, ruby colour. Very elegant red fruit nose with mint, cinnamon and vanilla aromas. Very firm palate shows crisp acidity, powdery tannic structure and delicate, soft red fruit character. Very lean and tight in style with long intense finish. Drinking superbly already now.
