The Story

An act of love, of freedom, of grower pride: introduced with the 2013 vintage, the ArnaldoRivera wines are the result of an official protocol drawn up between the winery and a number of its grower partners designed to produce premium quality grapes.

The vineyards of origin are among the most prestigious in the area of the Langhe. A resource that is encapsulated in this ultimate expression of know-how and craftsmanship, where the purity of the single varietal is the absolute pinnacle.

Keeping alive the tradition of a historic Barolo-producing winery, the ArnaldoRivera brand name is how the grower families have chosen to say thank you to their inspiration, sixty years after the founding of the Cooperative.

In a masterpiece of generosity and intuition - qualities which have always been inborn in the people of these hills - the “teacher” Arnaldo Rivera managed to unite many families in a challenge with a common purpose: to produce a great wine that would add value to their community and the local area.

Wine is made from grapes grownon 5 different vineyards within the cru, facing due south at an averageelevation of 400 m asl.

Written Notes

The Arnaldo Rivera 2016 Barolo Ravera is actually a blend of fruit from six vineyards located within the cru, planted at various stages from 1963 to 1968, 1970, 1991, 1992, 1997 and 1999 to 2002. The winemaking approach is the same as the other single-vineyard wines in this series, which see 32 months of aging in tonneaux and botte grande. The bouquet offers dark fruit and savory spice with tilled earth and cardamom pod. The Ravera also shows a meaty tone with bresaola or cured ham, but this is only a very light accent. The mouthfeel is tight and linear, with dusty tannins on the close. Some 5,600 bottles will hit the market in September 2020. This is one of my favorites in the series.

Founded in 1958 and based in Castiglione Falletto, Terre del Barolo is one of the most important cooperative wineries in the area, counting 300 member families who farm 600 hectares of vines. Three years ago, the winery embarked on an ambitious renewal effort, and one of its biggest projects was to rebrand the top-shelf wines under the name Arnaldo Rivera (the winery founder, who, as a businessman, teacher and World War II partigiano, or resistance fighter, was a larger-than-life figure). The cooperative is the only reality in the appellation that farms in all 11 comuni, or villages, of Barolo. This set of wines represents that amazing access to fruit, vineyards, microclimates and exposures. Those many variables are then transformed under the watchful eye of a single winemaker and a single team back at the Terre del Barolo winery under the management of Winery Director Stefano Pesci. There are 10 cru wines made from eight comuni. In addition, the classic Barolo called "Undicicomuni," represents a blend of as many as 21 vineyard sites, depending on the vintage.
