This is classic Crane with red fruit, plums, crushed stones and spices. Full, yet reserved and focused. This is a benchmark Crane for me in this vintage. Shows the stony character with polish. They tamed the Crane. Better after 2025.

The Story

Beckstoffer To Kalon is possibly Napa Valley’s most iconic vineyard, in part due to the number of 100-point wines that have carried its vineyard designation. Napa pioneer, Hamilton Crabb first planted the historical vineyard in 1868, and it was acquired by Andy Beckstoffer in 1993, who championed the concept of vineyard designated wines. The rest is history.

The vineyard lies on the western boundary of the Oakville Appellation. Running thro...

Wine Information

Napa pioneer Dr. George Belden Crane originally planted Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard in 1858. Acquired by Beckstoffer Vineyards in 1997, the vineyard’s pure rock to gravelly loam soils were replanted in 1998 to multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Just south and on the west side of St. Helena, it borders a rock quarry, which defines our block, planted to the rare, and shy yielding Clone 6 of Cabernet Sauvig...

Written Notes

The TOR Cabernet Sauvignon from the renowned Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard in the exceptional 2019 vintage is nothing short of remarkable. As I pour this wine into the glass, its deep, inky purple hue immediately captures my attention, hinting at the concentration and richness to come.

On the nose, an opulent bouquet of ripe blackberries, cassis, and dark cherries unfolds, mingling seamlessly with nuances of cedar, vanilla, and a subtle hint of tobacco. It's a complex symphony of aromas that promises an intriguing tasting experience.

The palate is equally impressive. Full-bodied and lush, this Cabernet Sauvignon coats the mouth with velvety tannins and a luxurious, almost creamy texture. Flavors of blackcurrant preserves, black plum, and espresso beans dance on the taste buds, revealing the wine's depth and concentration. There's an underlying mineral note that adds an extra layer of complexity.

The oak aging is evident but well-integrated, contributing notes of baking spices and dark chocolate without overshadowing the fruit. The finish is extraordinarily long, leaving a lasting impression of dark fruit, subtle oak, and a touch of graphite.

The 2019 TOR Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is a wine of immense power and finesse. It's a testament to the exceptional terroir of the Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard and the winemaking expertise behind it.

Inside Information

Our plan was simple. Our wines would come from only the best blocks in great vineyard sites I knew and revered. All our wines are hand-made in every sense and in very small quantities.
– Tor Kenward

After 26 years at Beringer Vineyards, Tor Kenward retired and opened his own Cabernet Sauvignon-based winery in St. Helena. Tor and his wife, Susan, draw on their extensive knowledge of the best vineyards in the Napa Valley as well as the long-standing relationships that they have had with their owners. With production being only around 5,000 cases, Tor focuses on creating wines that showcase what each famed vineyard has to offer while making blends that will continue to build the Napa Valley reputation.
