The Symington family have introduced a security seal on all their 2017 Vintage Ports to prevent counterfeiting and to guarantee the wine’s authenticity. The security seal is produced by the Portuguese national mint, Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda, and has been applied to the back neck of the bottle, attached to the capsule and stretching to the glass. Each seal has a unique code, a hologram, and a security glue which ensures the paper will te...

The Story

Over the centuries Warre's has made memorable wines which have earned for it First Growth status alongside a very small group of other elite producers. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Warre’s produced some of the greatest Vintage Ports ever made such as the 1870, 1887, 1896, the great 1904, the legendary 1908 and several more, all of which played a very significant role in establishing Port as one of the world’s finest wines.More recentl...

Wine Information

The hot and exceptionally dry conditions of 2017 in the Douro Valley showed the benefits of having a large proportion of old plantings in the vineyard. Warre’s Cavadinha and Retiro vineyards have old mixed-variety vines (one-fifth and one-third of the respective vineyards) which really came into their own in what was one of the hottest and driest years on record. These old field blend vines along with very low yields gives the Warre’s 2017 Vin...

Vintage 2017

The 2017 vintage produced exceptional ports in the Douro. It was a dry year with compact bunches of excellent quality berries and extremely low yields. The advanced growing season resulted in our earliest ever recorded harvest start date. Nothing less than a spectacular year for Vintage Port!

Written Notes

This finely structured wine is powered by fine tannins and rich fruits. A touch of acidity comes through the rich berry flavors and the concentration of the dark tannins. This wine will certainly age.

Lush and inviting in feel, with a beautifully creamy texture that lets plum sauce, blueberry reduction and raspberry pâte de fruit flavors glide along effortlessly. Notes of violet, anise and black tea are beguiling in the background before melding seamlessly on the finish. This shimmers with fruit, balanced by depth and spine. Best from 2035 through 2055.—J.M.

Loads of wet earth and grape aromas with hints of stems. Old vine aromas of bark and moss. Full-bodied sweet and structured with a big kick at the end. Very impressive. Exceptional layers of fruit and energy. A stronger and more muscular Warre.
3,600 cases. Try after 2018.

The 2017 Warre’s Vintage Port is made from some incredibly low yields, the Retiro vineyard cropped at a paltry 470 grams per vines. It has a very concentrated nose. This is higher-toned than the Cockburn’s with macerated black cherries, boysenberry jam, orange rind and a subtle eau-de-vie like element that becomes more pronounced with aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced and very well structured. This has tons of grip, a more masculine and assertive Warre’s compared to recent vintages. The acidity is extremely well judged with layers of black fruit laced with graphite and white pepper towards the prolonged finish. This will require a decade in the cellar to soften those tannins, but it will surely be worth the wait.

Inside Information

Warre’s 2017 has bright floral aromas of roses and violets, typical of the Touriga Nacional and also of rockrose, which is a feature of the Touriga Franca. On the palate the wine is full and plummy with amazing concentration and buoyant freshness delivering flavors of black cherries and blackberries. Layers of complexity are gradually revealed with a remarkable full-bodied structure.
