Blauer Spätburgunder – Weingut Karl H. Johner

In 1985 after ten years abroad Karl Heinz Johner and his wife Irene founded a little Weingut (Estate) in their home village "Bischoffingen" in the Kaiserstuhl.
His focus was on the Burgundian styles - wines full of structure and pure elegance. Despite having to overcome problems relating to winemaking in the Kaiserstuhl and German wine laws the young Weingut soon established himself as a pioneer of a new German winestyle recognised as being of an International class. Today "Weingut Karl H Johner" is considered one of the best Estates in Germany and is recognised amongst most wine experts.

The Kaiserstuhl, a volcanic island in the Rhine Valley, has an ideal climate for growing wine. Because of the mineral volcanic ash soils the vines grow in a unique terroir.
The Pinot Noir SJ comes from special vineyards growing on these volcanic ash soils. Selective picking by hand, careful and gentle processing, a constant monitoring of the fermentation using modern equipment, and maturing contributes to obtain quality from the vineyard to the bottle.

Soil: volcanic ash

Grape varieties: Pinot Noir

Average age of vines: 10-30 years

Harvest method: handpicking

Winemaking: Four weeks of skin contact fermentation 100% destemmed and a malolactic fermentation half a year later

Ageing: in 100% new oak barrels for 18-21 months
