The Story

Drinking Pétrus may be an unforgettable experience. We has been lucky to have the opportunity to taste most of its great vintages. That is why wine enthusiasts often come to us for advice. First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

Written Notes

The 1959 Petrus was packed with that signature, black olive nose. It had great wheat grains and truly seductive aromas of plum and chocolate with a bit of tomato and mesquite. The palate was on the red side with cherry, citrus tang and dust. It got better with more delicious chocolaty flavors. This was another exceptional Petrus (96).

“The Tb tips of the day. Sometimes you might feel a bit unfortunate when you find your Petrus 1959 Magnum leaking at your wine cellar. If you are lucky it still might be drinkable or like today, it was too oxidated. No worries, just use it as consommé with game stew, and you can still enjoy it, the whole magnum. 98 points”

The 1959 Petrus is a wine that I have been fortunate to taste on three occasions, the first in 2005 spellbinding and the second, at the Hof van Cleve restaurant in Belgium, not quite in the same league. This third comes from a magnum of impeccable provenance served in Bordeaux, though perversely on the Left Bank, not Right. One must remember that this was just three years after the vineyard had been devastated by frost, Mme. Loubat opting to whittle vines down to stump instead of replanting, a risky strategy that worked. It has a quite brilliant bouquet with vibrant red fruit, hints of those Chanterelle fungi that I remarked on before, veins of peppermint developing with aeration. It glistens brightly for 25-30 minutes before remembering its age and fading a little. The palate is beautifully balanced with shimmering red fruit, crushed strawberry and cranberry, a little sous-bois and hung game towards the rustic but compelling finish. It is a fabulous wine, not perfect, but testament to the fortitude of the indefatigable Mme. Loubat. Tasted in Bordeaux at a private dinner.

This Lafite bottling was in a relatively good form with some delicate complexity on the nose, savoury notes, roasted smoky aromas and leather. The palate has accentuated acidity and the fruit is losing its intensity. Tight and firm palate that is alive but will no longer improve. Drink within the next 5 years.
