The Story

Drinking Pétrus may be an unforgettable experience. We has been lucky to have the opportunity to taste most of its great vintages. That is why wine enthusiasts often come to us for advice. First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

Written Notes

The 1998 Petrus was another monster of a nose, pairing well with the 1999. It was deep like the middle of nowhere in the Pacific, possessing both black fruit and pudding. Its minerals glistened, and smoke and raspberry added complexity. Its palate was a whopper, and while tight, it still showed its big personality well. Flavors of earth, yeast, plum and chocolate were all present, and its acidity lingered in the belly. This was the first, truly profound Petrus of the weekend

It is out of my price range, but if you have the coin or friends with the bank, if you are seeking a Petrus with some age that is really hitting all the right notes, 1998 is the wine to buy. The wine is loaded from start to finish with chocolate-coated cherries, truffles, flowers, plums, smoke, touches of blue fruits, and a mild touch of menthol. Full-bodied, rich, opulent, silky, and fresh, the wine is polished, refined, intense, and palate-coating with purity and length. Drink from 2023-2050.

The 1998 Petrus is the best Right Bank of the decade and here, against the 2000 and 2001, there is no contest. This is the business. It has a ripe, opulent and ineffably complex bouquet with brilliant definition and a sense of mineralité that is more common in a Burgundy Grand Cru. The palate is full-bodied with perfect balance and yet it knows that it does not need to grip the mouth, rather lavishes it in pure tensile red fruit. There is tension and electricity that effortlessly counters the density and opulence of this Pomerol, delivering a luxuriant hint of menthol on the finish. Astonishing. Tasted at the Petrus dinner at the Épure restaurant in Hong Kong.

Pure, healthy crimson with some paleness at the rim. Very, very complete and opulent, yet totally fresh on the nose. Wonderfully compact and concentrated even on the nose. Yes! Just what Bordeaux is all about. Harmony and sumptuousness and delicacy. Very delicate on the palate. Tannins still very dry and prominent on the back of the palate. So different from the majority of modern reds. Quite a cool finish. Nose opened out to something reminiscent of warm bricks. Lovely perfumed quality. Lively and very, very refreshing. Very, very healthy and even.

Ruby, ruby rim, floral, herbs, bell peppers (I and most around the table thaught this to be the Cheval) leather, intense nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, lively, not as easy going as number two (Ausone), ads in length with air, very refreshing, stunning. 97
