The Story

Bollinger La Grande Année Rosé is an alternative expression of La Grande Année, transformed by the addition, at blending, of the unique red wine from La Côte aux Enfants. The emblematic single plot of the House, located in Aÿ, produces still red wine only when the grapes reach perfect ripeness. After vinification in small aged oak barrels and a prolonged ageing on its lees, even today every bottle of La Grande Année Rosé is riddled and disgorged by hand. This reflects all the expertise of the House, able to create a cuvée whose quality is matched only by its rarity.

This champagne has an appearance with pinkish glints. A real mosaic of fruit aromas of raspberry, wild strawberries, and cherries. Notes of peach and quince complete this fruity bouquet. This wine is characterised by its creamy effervescence, splendid volume in the mouth and long aromatic persistence. Its wonderful acidity and sea-air characteristics appear alongside flavours of orchard fruits and berries.

Wine Information

La Grande Année Rosé is another expression of La Grande Année, featuring all the traditional expertise of Champagne Bollinger: vinification in barrels, riddling and disgorging performed entirely by hand. All this rigorous work and craftsmanship comes together to make La Grande Année Rosé a truly handmade cuvée.

La Grande Année Rosé 2014 is the fruit of a blend of La Grande Année 2014 and a unique red wine from the Côte aux Enfants. This emblematic plot in Aÿ, one of Bollinger’s single plots, is vinified in red only when the grape maturation is optimal, a rarity that contributes to the quality of the wine produced.

Vuosikerta 2014

This year was all about alternating weather patterns. A particularly wet winter gave way to a warm and dry spring. May saw some rain, and even though late June-brought about a minor heatwave, the remainder of the summer was moist and murky. Disease pressure was lifted but once again fine, hot September weather was able to save and concentrate the crop. A large crop (11,553 kg/ha) was picked from September 8th onwards. The year's biggest problem was the sour rot caused by the drosophila suzukii flies. It, and the challenging weather, demanded plenty of care and selection work in the vineyards. The results are variable. The year was especially demanding for Pinot Meunier from the Vallée de la Marne, which received a lot of rainfall and was troubled by both mildew and sour rot. With an average potential alcohol of 10.0% and total acidity of 8.3 g/l, 2014 looks good on paper and so too in the glass, despite its challenges. The successful wines come with attractive fruit, lovely vibrant acidity and an overt easiness to them.

As mentioned, a dribble of red, Pinot Noir from the famous La Côte aux Enfants plot, is added, making up just five percent of the wine. The plot was originally purchased by Jacques Bollinger III, husband of the famous Madame Lily Bollinger. It was called “Enfants” (“children”) as it is supposedly so steep that only a child would climb it.

Fruit from other sources is used for the NV Rosé. Again, elegant with spice notes, red fruits, berries, cherries, a hint of that same minerality, and licorice. Great freshness, layered, and yet with such an enticing texture. Soft and long, a lovely Rosé that will be even better in a decade, I have no doubt. 95. This is assuredly a food wine, but, please, not dessert. Asian dishes, duck, game, even a rich seafood dish.

“The pleasurable and vibrant La Grande Année 2014 as the base, the red Pinot Noir wine from La Côte aux Enfants vineyard blends in perfectly, creating La Grande Année Rosé of effortless beauty and seamlessness. The wine comes with bright, orange hued peachy color. There is a sweet strawberry note to the nuanced nose of cherry, peach candy, vanilla, licorice and quince. It is for the time being youthful with the rainbow of berry aromas dominating. Yet the refined spiciness comes forward stronger on the silky-smooth palate of utterly sophisticated phenolics. The overall impression is elegant, even if vinous, with the brisk acidity enhancing the feeling of vibrancy and lightness. The wine ends on a gourmand, savoury and fruity note. A gorgeous La Grande Année Rosé. Tasting note for a bottle disgorged in August 2021.”

A rainy autumn and winter were followed by two very dry and sunny months, then summer – and particularly August – saw markedly cold weather. Despite these conditions, the musts had a wonderful balance of maturity and acidity, giving rise to an intense and multifaceted La Grande Année Rosé 2014 vintage. Tasting reveals the gradual way in which the different aromas come into play
