The Story

First released in 2008, Bollinger Rosé is a relatively new addition to the range.  This Champagne puts on spectacular display Bollinger's approach with and expertise in Pinot Noir, and showcases the play between power and refinement that defines Bollinger.  The wine starts with a base Special Cuvée: complex and full bodied, perfectly balanced with fresh acidity and a texture that only time can lend, creating a harmony of richness and elegance....

Vintage 1999

A difficult start to the year led to early budbreak. There were some damaging hailstorms in early May, but the frost ultimately stayed away. The summer was overall warm and thanks to the hot and dry August, the grapes looked promising for the harvest. However, a damp September challenged producers and dilution was an issue for some. The 1999 harvest that started on September 15th produced a large yield (12,989 kg/ha) of sweet grapes that resul...

Written Notes

An interesting one for me. Bolly have a policy in making these wines, or certainly did, by way of adding a small percentage of the best local pinot to make the vintage rose. For me, if you've made the Grand Annee to the highest possible standard, surely tipping in some extra pinot throws this out of whack a little? As a result, I was rarely a fan of the Bolly Rose, though always loved the rest of their stable. The exception to this is that after considerable ageing, everything seemingly comes together and an older Bolly Rose is usually a treat. Recently, there have been a few vintages that have also drunk beautifully on release. For me, this is not really one of them. Not a bad wine but I find it falls well short of the rest of the range. But I am not a fan of the 99's in general, a low acid year (there are, of course, exceptions), so perhaps that is why I am less excited by this wine. I believe that there will not be a 2000 Rose (and presumably none from 2001), so it will be a while before we can test all this. This one is soft with gentle red fruits and hints of tobacco leaf. A smidge of dry hay. A mid length style, a little broad. Some red cherry notes. Aims to be more of a complex wine than the exuberant NV Rose. I prefer the latter.
