Vintage 1945

The best vintage in the world – 1947 or 1945? Tastingbook has tasted all the best wines from these two great vintages.

If wine producers from different regions were asked to name the best vintages in their wine history, most would name 1947 or 1945 as one of the greats. If we then compared them, there would probably only be one vintage that most, if not all, producers had named on the list – 1947.

Written Notes

The 1924 Beychevelle was unfortunately corked, but its texture was the best of the first four. The flavors behind the corked quality were great; its fruit was deeper with nice cassis and flesh, as well as great balance.

Upper shoulder fill. Ruby core with broad orange rim. Lots of sediments. Leather, tobacco, some cedar, very mature nose. Fresh acidity, some tannins still, sweet and sour, cherries, figs, the flavours are not as pure as some this vintage, rustic and sort of edgy, touch dusty and earthy. Long if a bit narrow. 91

Tasted in March 2015 during dinner at Domaine de Chevalier. Truffles, beautifully aromatic nose, stunningly gracious and stylish wine, excellent on palate with lively fruit, tannin and acidity. Smooth and gracious finish. Awesome stuff!

Château-bottled. Level was almost by the neck. Decanted one hour. Dark, opaque red fading gradually to a teak coloured rim. Rich and complex on the nose with grand depth and aromas of spice, vegetal cassis and old oak. Fully flavoured, medium to full bodied and well balanced. An elegant but commanding wine with flavours of sweet fruit, cedar, coffee, spicy old oak and undertones of herbs, a silky texture, splendid concentration and a long, well balanced finish. The wine has been fully mature for over three decades already, but will still last another decade.
