The Story

A new approach starting in 1985

Stephan von Neipperg totally redefined viticulture and winemaking at Canon La Gaffelière, succeeding in reflecting the very best of what the estate has to offer. The present richness and concentration of its wines place Canon La Gaffelière among the top crus classés of Saint Emilion - which was exactly its position in the 1940s.

For quite some time, this siliceous terroir suffered from a fairly mediocre im...

Vintage 2015

Full report of Bordeaux 2015 by Andrew Caillard MW “Next in line in a great series of vintages; 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2015.

2015 is a wonderful Bordeaux vintage without the hype or hysteria associated with 2009 and 2010. The wines are generally expressive and generous with wonderful concentration and structure. Given another year in barrel, the wines should gain more complexity and fruit volume. Châteaux, in all sub-regions, are e...

Written Notes

Composed of 55% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Franc and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in French oak, 55% new, for 17 months, the 2015 Canon la Gaffeliere features a deep garnet-purple color and a cedar-laced nose to begin, giving way to fragrant underlying scents of roses and violets with a core of crushed black currants, blackberries and Bing cherries plus hints of fallen leaves and dusty earth. Medium to full-bodied, the seductively perfumed red and black fruit fills the mouth, framed with plush tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing very long and minerally.

Mixture of rich and ripened black and red fruit, black pepper and liquorice. Very fine and elegant with quite much silky tannin. Smooth with medium long finish. A nice vintage for Canon La Gaffeliere! 94-95+
  • 94p
Dark purple red with violet hue and almost black core. Very elegant nose with pure fruit, blackberries and sweet elderberries, distinct roasting aroma and gingerbread spices in the background. On palate well structured with fine tannins, succulent fruit, discreet spiciness and excellent length. Very fine and persistent on the palate.
  • 96p
Deep colour. Espresso, dark cherry, dark plum aromas with musky notes. Generous and looseknit with delicious juicy red currant, dark plum fruit, mocha, vanilla oak, fine chewy graphite textures and lovely mineral length. Builds up firm and tight. Well made wine. 94 points

Canon La Gaffeliere Saint Emilion Grand Cu Classe – 58% Merlot 38% Cabernet Franc 7% Cabernet Sauvignon Bright nose, cassis, firm meaty, cool fruit on the palate, good intensity and concentration, a dusty edge to the fruit on the finish, nice length, I like the intensity and persistence, oak shows. This is a very good Canon La Gaffeliere but perhaps lacks a bit of mid-palate density to contend with the very best in the commune. 91- 94/100 2025-2040
