The Story

Since 1983, Denis Durantou has been at the helm of this historic estate. He has quietly performed something of a revolution, introducing a host of innovations and bringing his wine-making philosophy to one of the greatest terroirs in Bordeaux. The 4.5 hectares used for the grand vin are situated next to the church in Pomerol on gravel and clay soils. A further 1.5 hectares of on sandy soils account for the excellent Petite Eglise.

Written Notes

The 1954 l’Eglise-Clinet was the final vintage under the former “Clos l’Eglise-Clinet” label. Curiously since 2009 I have tasted three bottles all from the Durantou family’s cellar, the best the first one that actually improved in the glass, the second two years later almost honeyed on the nose and yet unlike the first, oxidizing after 30 minutes. This third bottle has an almost Burgundy-like bouquet that veers back to Pomerol with scents of Xmas cake, fig and a touch of leather, in fact, cut from the same cloth as the first bottle. The palate is very well balanced with fine-grain tannins. It is fully mature of course, open and a little soft towards the finish with notes of orange rind and allspice interlacing the red fruit. It is in remarkably good condition given the growing season. Tasted at the l’Eglise-Clinet vertical at the château in April 2018.
