Vintage 1983

Bordeaux / If 1981 was forgotten after 1982, the 1983 was completely eclipsed by 1982, although the harvest was large and of high quality throughout Bordeaux. Too much humidity caused by heavy rains hampered production in many places. At Margaux, some wines were even better than 1982. For example, Château Margaux announced that their 1983 surpassed the 1982. One of the best Palmers of all time was Palmer 1983.

The 1983 Palmer was neck and neck with the Margaux, although I didn’t get a chance to write a complete note. The first ‘Ganbei’ of the night struck. For those of you who don’t know what it means, it means ‘bottoms up.’ Yes, it seems a bit inappropriate when it comes to fine and rare wine, but the power of the Ganbei is greater. If in China, and someone says it, I highly recommend that you drink up. When with the Chairman, it is mandatory (95).

After a string of hot, sunny days at the end of the month and into early October, the sugar levels were similar if not superior to those in 1982. A medium-intense, tawny red colour. Complex developed aromas of farmyard, mocha, tobacco, cedar and black currants. Medium-bodied palate with stalky tannins, fleshy ripe dark fruit and spicy, toasty cigar aromas with vegetal nuances of canned bamboo shoots. An opulent wine with a long, persistent, lean finish with chewy tannins.

1983 Château Palmer
Very top neck fill. Ruby core with brick rim. Scented, whiff of tobacco, dates, figs, cedar, floral, nuanced, almost transparent in its silky layers of bouquet. Some cassis, faint mint whiff and blueberries below, touch of Turkish spice market, incredible nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, subtle, gentle, detailed, layered, smooth, outstanding balance, ethereal, butterflies in flight, incredible length. 98

Strong ruby with a developed rim. Very subtle and delicate. This is fully mature wine! So gentle and gorgeous! Stunning sweet fruit and such concentration and length. Dense, with a hint of mint, but truly great. Strong.
