Characteristics of the vintage / The cool, humid weather in early spring brought a rather late budburst and fairly slow vine growth. A hailstorm on 11 May hit the Palmer vineyard without affecting the harvest's qualitative potential.

Vintage 2009

Much like 1947, 1961 and 2005, 2009 is a year of almost overly (for Bordeaux) flamboyant and opulent wines with high maturity and low acidity. The tannins are exceptionally ripe, while the wines are quite voluptuous in style. Fruit driven aromatics rather than floral or delicate flavours. There is a chunkiness to this wine which reflects the vintage – powerful, ripe, generous and layered. It is no doubt an impressive vintage, there is just a lot of everything; it is a Palmer on steroids (not a bad thing). A very big, generous wine for long term ageing. (96)

2009 Palmer - Just starting to knock on the door of secondary aromatics, you can peek into the wine and find truffle, flowers, tobacco leaf, smoked cherries and spice. But that is only the beginning. Once you taste the wine and you feel those sensuous textures as the wine glides across your palate, you know this is special. The wine has more than ample density, but it is not heavy. The lift in the mid-palate keeps all those layers of ripe, dark red, earthy fruits alive. Vibrant, elegant and silky, the end note remains with you for at least 50 seconds or more. If you like more youthful fruit in your wine, you can drink this now. If you want to enjoy the wine as it heads to its peak, give it another decade of rest. Consistent notes. This wine had incredibly scented nose and palate, black cherries and Varlhona chocolate everywhere, awesome complexity structure and length, fat fruit and tannin on the palate. Very sophisticated wine with both power and extreme elegance. Heavenly stuff.

 Robert Parker« One of the all-time great Palmers (along with the 1961, 1966, 1970, 1989, 2000 and 2005), the 2009 Palmer is a blend of 52% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and a whopping 7% Petit Verdot that came in at close to 14% natural alcohol. An opaque blue/black color suggests a wine with thrilling levels of concentration and intensity, and that-s exactly what a taster gets. Subtle smoke, incense and Asian spice (soy?) notes interwoven with graphite, blueberry, blackberry and cassis characteristics lead to a full-bodied, phenomenally concentrated, viscous, opulent wine with plenty of sweet tannin. This sensational Palmer reveals even more floral notes than vintages such as 2005 and 2000. It should drink well for 50 years.  »

« Regoûté quatre fois depuis les primeurs, sa note est en hausse. Grand nez fin et subtil dans lequel j’ai même trouvé des odeurs très heureuses de fruits blancs (poire rôtie). Bouche superbe où le moelleux de la trame suscite un fort hédonisme. Pour autant le vin offre une construction classique tramée, puissante, mais toujours pleine du sens de la mesure. Superbe finale au grain fin. Il deviendra un modèle.  »

« Réglisse, nez très très doux; du fruit très concentré, un vin massif, arômes de mûres et fruits noirs, chocolat, floral. 50 % de merlot composent ce vin à la texture soyeuse, seulement deux tiers de bois neuf lui confèrent (ou plutôt)conservent sa belle fraîcheur. »

« – Nez extrêmement puissant de fruits noirs très mûrs avec des arômes de cassis. Sa structure est composée avec une majorité de Merlot (52%) et intègre une faible quantité de Petit Verdot (7%). C’est un vin massif en bouche, très frais, avec des tanins onctueux, fermes et fins. Il possède beaucoup d’élégance grâce à sa profondeur allégée par les tanins. S’il apparaît suave et quelque peu asséchant en finale, la grande richesse de sève et sa longueur en font un vin droit, franc, sur la dentelle, avec des épices fumées, des notes de cuir. »
