Château Pichon Longueville

Château Pichon Longueville, or Pichon Baron as it is often called, is known as "the male" part of the original Pichon Longueville property that got divided in 1850, not only due to the fact that the male heir inherited this part but also because it is a more "manly" wine in character than its sister, Pichon Lalande, across the road.

Written Notes

Tasted in October 2020. This time, it wasn't that open as 11 years ago in 2009. Seemed somewhat unevolved, young and telling you to wait at least 20 years longer to fully enjoy it. Anyway, great potential is there!

Château Pichon Longueville Baron 2001 PT 91p 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc. 54% Grand Vin, IPT 77, 13.1% alc. 70% new oak. 39hl/ha Medium deep purple. This is much more open and expressive on the nose than the 2002 with decidedly ripe, almost jammy, red and black fruit. This is beautifully structured with very fine flavours. It is just entering the seriously complex phase peculiar to all great red Bordeaux. This is a classic Pichon – all elegance and understated power. The tannins are firm but just beginning to soften and the wine is entering its drinking window. Drink now – 2020.
