The Story

The estate's Le Richbourg is produced from a parcel of vines bought by Etienne's father, Jean Grivot, in 1984. The love and attention lavished upon these old vines (over 60 years old) ever since has paid dividends in recent years: the wines are rich, complete, persistent on the palate with a very long ageing potential that will reward patient winelovers. This Le Richbourg is immensely powerful, very rich and tannic which acquires, with age, a ...

2016 RED BURGUNDY VINTAGE REPORT

The 2016 harvest was, of course, later for Pinot Noir in the Côtes de Nuits, and some climats had different productions depending on how they weathered the frost of April 26th. In this report I will talk about each of the producers’ allocations to illustrate the variations between the totals from the 2015 and 2016 vintages. Written Notes

The 2016 Richebourg Grand Cru is deep in colour compared to its peers. The bouquet is just stunning: laser-like focus of black cherries, bilberry, crushed stone and iris flowers that blossom with aeration, seeming to gain intensity with every passing moment. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and perhaps more black than red fruit. Extremely well delineated with wonderful salinity, this begins to fan out on the finish. Then, remembering that it is just a baby, it tapers back in to remind you that it will need 10 to 15 years in the cellar before it reaches full flight. This is a fabulous wine. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Domaine Jean Grivot, Richebourg GC
Almost as good as the 2015 - and that's saying a lot - this hails from a 0.32-hectare plot, ranging in age between 60 and 80 years' old. This is a stunning Grand Cru that's already a pleasure to drink but needs at least a decade in bottle. Svelte, sensuous and very attractive, it's a diva of a wine with intricate, finely balanced flavours and chalky precision. 2026-40
