The Story

The Grand Cru Chevalier Montrachet sits high on the hillside overlooking Le Montrachet, Bâtard Montrachet and the village of Puligny Montrachet far below.

As a leader of biodynamic viticulture, Domaine Leflaive is renowned for the attention to detail and care that goes in to nourishing each vine from ground to bottle. This organic method of cultivation enriches the soil with plant-based compounds, thus sparing the vines of harmful herbicid...

Vintage 2009

A warm spring with some hail in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits. After an even flowering and a warm June, the summer arrived with variable July weather. Fortunately August was fine with a period of hot weather in the second week. September started with some rain, then became fine and warm again. A harvest of healthy, ripe grapes followed. Written Notes

“An ultra-pure and high-toned nose of mineral-based reduction, spiced pear and acacia blossom gives way to overtly stony and quite finely detailed broad-shouldered flavors that despite their significant size and weight, are crystalline in their transparency. This very much seems to be built on a base of liquid limestone with impeccable balance and flat out stunning persistence.”(96pts BH)

Full, bright yellow; swirls thicker than the '11. Creamy-sweet pineappley nose suggests a rather low-acid wine. Delivers almost confectionery sweetness on entry, then large-scaled and opulent in the middle, with yellow fruit flavors verging on exotic. Today this wine is dominated by its ripe-vintage character and its plush wave of fruit, but the very long, resounding, chewy finish reveals a strong, even slightly edgy mineral underpinning that may yet take several more years to make itself felt. Ultimately quite dry and stony for all its honeyed richness and fat. From the start, then-cellarmaster Eric Remy described 2009 as an easy vintage--in direct contrast to 2008, which required multiple treatments against oidium in the vineyards and extensive use of the sorting table. (13.45% alcohol; 3.16 pH; the harvest began on September 5)

Pale lemon yellow. Apples, citrus, lemons, some candied lemons notes, vanilla and spices, minerals, touch smoky nose. Fresh acidity, fresh, fruity, apples, pears, minerals, some vanilla, intense and concentrated, incredible length, this one just goes on and on. 97
