1999 VINTAGE in Burgundy

The last harvest of the century

Generous yields and exceptional quality for Burgundy's 1999 harvest

Burgundy, France, November 1999 ? The 1999 Burgundy wine harvest was as generous in terms of yield as it was exceptional in terms of quality. According to the Burgundy Wine Bureau (BIVB), the climatic conditions permitted, as happens only rarely, the number of grape bunches per plant to exceed the average of the...

Written Notes

In many cases bottles of the 1999 vintage can be accused of being more 1999 than a wine of its particular provenance: the vintage is masked by the terroir. (This is not to say that it may not be delicious!). But here we have a wine which is a true Volnay, as well as being as rich and as concentrated as one might expect.

Taillepieds lies in the heart of the best part of Volnay. Clos de Chênes is upslope. The 60 Ouvrées of the Caillerets just on the other side of the road. The wine is firmer than the latter; more refined than the former. Here is a lovely, elegant, fragrant, harmonious wine. Now ready, but you could confidently hold on to it for another decade.

Perfect level, perfect cork. Bought soon after release.

Very healthy colour without any indication of its age. The 1999 Volnays of Marquis d'Angerville were seductive soon after release but then they shut down for more than a decade and all the bottles I tasted during the last years were much too young. This bottle however was impressive from the first sip on and I do not think that Volnay can taste any better than this. Outstanding purity of dark berry fruit, despite its 13,5% Vol. it tasted extremely refined, perfect balance between fruit and acidity, marvellous length. I am sure that it has finally reached a plateau of great pleasure where it will stay for at least another decade. My 96 point rating may turn out to be conservative.  A memorable Pinot Noir, perfect for Christmas eve...

Ruby, garnet rim. Tight nose, not giving much. Fresh acidity, lean, thin, tight, close-fisted. Needs time.
