Maison Mumm grundades i Reims 1827 av tyska vinhandlarfamiljen von Mumm. År 1852 tog sonen till en av grundarna, Georges Hermann Mumm, över ledarskapet av champagnehuset. Fem år senare registrerade han namnet ”Cordon Rouge” med det tydliga röda bandet som blev en symbol för den goda kvaliteten hos champagnehuset G.H. Mumm.
