The Story

Meshach Burge was Grant Burge's Great Grandfather, and the man who began the Burge winemaking tradition. Aged 11, he came to the Barossa Valley from Hillcot in Wiltshire, England, with his family establishing a thriving viticultural wheat and sheep property near Lyndoch. In 1865, under the watchful eye of his father, Meshach began making the first wines in the Burge winemaking history. In tribute, our finest Shiraz bears his name.

Vintage 1999

Australia Vintage Report:1999 also had a dry winter in Australia, with average temperatures for all months. However, there were a considerable amount of drizzly days at harvest time, causing some headaches with varieties susceptible to Botrytis cluster rot, ie. Grenache. It cleared up and the wines produced were all closed and slightly below average intensity. They look better and better.

Written Notes

1999 and 1998 are very similar in some respects to 1991 and 1990. The less hyped vintage followed one that was the stuff of legends almost as soon as it was off the vine. All four produced many excellent wines. I’m a massive fan of '91's, believing them in most cases to have exceeded the more exuberant '90's. The qualitative differences between '98 and '99 are less distinct but there are numerous instances where '99 has surprised and snuck up to edge the '98's, which are more show ponies. I had expected that this would be so here and while both are excellent, the '98 is by far the superior wine on the evidence of these two bottles This one exhibited bright spices, attractive floral notes and was more vibrant though less brooding than the '98. That merest whiff of iced vovo's again, which is certainly not unpleasant and I suspect could be traced back to the oak. It is a little more clunky than one would wish. Plenty of grip, juicy acidity and a mid length wine. Good, but to be honest, I would have hoped for even more from a '99 of such lofty pedigree. 91

Deep, dark red-ruby. Dusty perfume of small dark berries, black pepper and spices, along with fragrant mocha and chocolate barrel fermentation notes. An exceptionally elegant, feminine Meshach, with a silky palate of intense, concentrated dark berry fruits wrapped in fine, firm tannins. Creamy, superbly balanced and long, with a lingering herbal thread of fennel and clove.
