The Story

Lanson is one of the rare champagne Houses to have a collection of century-old vintages: the Lanson Vintage Collection. Our vintages take time to mature in the cellar and develop extraordinary aromas. 1904, 1928, 1955, 1971, 1976, 1983 and 1990 are great vintages that have built up the reputation of our Maison, generation after generation.

Vintage 1985

Severe winter temperatures and spring frosts did great damage, leaving many in the region unhopeful of a good year. The destruction was excessive especially in the northern Montagne de Reims, in the hillside vineyards west of Reims and in the Aube. The early summer weather did not raise the hopes, but finally fine September weather came to the rescue and yields ended up being better than feared (albeit tiny, 6,827 kg/ha) when picking commenced...

Collection 1985’ in Magnum

Lanson have put their money where their cellar is and offer a range of wines with extensive ageing on lees before disgorgement. Many are in magnums. They mature superbly and can be thrilling wines. A recent ‘Collection 1985’ in Magnum (A$1,300), from a small but stellar vintage, shows how well this program works. If your pockets are deep enough, you will not be disappointed. This champagne was disgorged in February, 2018, so has spent a very long time on lees – more than three decades, which is almost unheard of for a commercially available champagne (granted in extremely limited quantities and for serious dosh). It is mature and complex with nutty notes and hints of white chocolate. A touch of apricot and smoked pear. Tobacco leaf and truffle notes. Glorious. 98.

A lovely masterpiece with sublime balance and superlative floral creaminess. One of the wines from 85 that has chosen the right path of development. Some in this sensual school are strangely tired and the others are balanced with a transient creamy floweriness.

Strong savoury soya and earthy characters dominate the clearly oxidative nose. Some attractive banana flambée aromas open up over time as do a curious oyster note. Super fresh, even tight palate contrasts the old wine nose. Big acidity for a 1985. Palate has lovely tension and length but the nose on this early 2017 disgorged magnum has suprising maturity.
