The Story

Of all the villages of the Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis is one of the most fruitful in terms of the number of its Grands Crus. The Clos de Tart, which remains a solely-held entity, was founded by the Cistercians of Tart in 1141. Since that date, it has been owned by only three families. The Clos Saint-Denis came on the scene in the 11th century, thanks to the fortress of Vergy. The Clos de la Roche and Clos des Lambrays are both semi-monop...

Tasting note

Deeper and less bright garnet. Wonderfully fragrant with a light note of undergrowth even though the fruit remains fresh and to the fore. Still rather restrained, delicate in the mid palate then more power on the back and determined length. Silky rather than velvet. ‘Classic', says Sylvain Pitiot, and easy to underestimate. 17.5/20. Drink 2008-2016 (Julia Harding - JancisRobinson.com - Corney & Barrow Tasting March 26th 2009).

Vintage 2001

2001 VINTAGE in Burgundy

A promising start to the new millennium...

Growing season and weather conditions

The winter, during which the vines lay dormant, was a mild one.

The first signs of bud-burst came early but wintry conditions in April accompanied by frosts in the most exposed vineyards slowed down the start of the growing season.

The first flowers...

Written Notes

Very fine well defined nose showing lovely cherry fruit and appealing spiciness, as well as a hint of earthy evolution. Silky texture here: real elegance and also good freshness. Fine grained yet firm tannins and pretty cherry and raspberry fruit. Nice focus on the finish. – Jamie Goode 95p (Oct 2015)

Medium to medium-full colour. Just about mature. Very lovely gentle, fragrant nose with a touch of oak. Fresh and lovely. Medium to medium-full body. Ripe, soft and round yet with good grip and intensity and no lack of vigour. Really seductive. Very fine indeed for the vintage.

CLOS DE TART 2001 Dark, brooding, and intense, smokey nose with spicy, black fruit, blackberries, meaty notes, licorice, oak and black tea. A bit developed but still has more to give. Medium bodied but filled with spicy, earthy, dark red fruit that delivers a very long, fresh and focused impression. Not very tannic but still with a great grip on the palate. Builds on the finish and ads more of the black tea component displayed on the nose. Still young but very drinkable. Drink now-2027 93p.
