The Story

Of all the villages of the Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis is one of the most fruitful in terms of the number of its Grands Crus. The Clos de Tart, which remains a solely-held entity, was founded by the Cistercians of Tart in 1141. Since that date, it has been owned by only three families. The Clos Saint-Denis came on the scene in the 11th century, thanks to the fortress of Vergy. The Clos de la Roche and Clos des Lambrays are both semi-monop...

Wine Information

Tasting note

Extremely invinting. Ripe fruit and intense mocha aroma and fully spiced. Thick and full in the mouth, the deepest pile tannins of the wines tasted in this flight but very smooth. Rich and voluptuous and dense with no hint of overripeness of fruit or harshness of tannin and just enough freshness. Unexpectedly delicious and hedonistic. Chewy and mouthfilling and fragrant on the finish with a warmth at the very end. 18/20. Drink ...

Written Notes

A punchy, big wine that does not sufficiently show its terroir character. Dark ruby colour uncharacteristic of a Pinot Noir. Ripe, almost confectionary fruit has great density and impact on the palate but lacks finesse and lightness; it is even a touch alcoholic on the finish. Nonetheless, very intense and will be appealing very early.(91)

Such an atypical wine from the famously hot vintage. Rich, sweet berry fruits nose with a bit of spiciness. Warm with some tarry richness. The palate has a minty edge to the ripe, sweet, structured berry fruits. Dense, sweet and atypical, finishing minty. It has appeal, I guess, but so unusual for Clos de Tart. – Jamie Goode 92p (Oct 2015)

Very full colour indeed. Still youthful looking. Ample, rich, slighly chocolaty, but not too baked or pruney on the nose. On the palate surprisingly fresh and sophisticated. This is due to good supporting acidity. Energetic and positive. A great success.

CLOS DE TART 2003 This is not your average Burgundy nose. So intense and big, filled with sweet dark fruit, oak, loads of spices, licorice, smoke, raw meat, overripe plums and floral notes. Incredibly huge nose that’s very far from elegant but still has lots of depth. Massive and very fruity palate with surprisingly smooth mouthfeel and tannins. Lush and loads of sweet dark fruit and spices that seamlessly continues into a somewhat long but a bit heavy finish. There’s no elegance here but lots of impressive power that should keep this wine alive for a very long time. However I doubt it fits every Burgundy lovers taste. Drink 2020-2030+? 92p.
