The Story

Time is expressed in Opus One by the character of the vintage: sometimes with a personality that is highly defined and sometimes with a shade of difference quite subtle from other vintages.  Through the minds and hands of the vineyard workers we capture time and the essence of the season – coaxing concentration and tempering abundance.

Place is often defined as terroir and denotes the special characteristics that geography, geology and clim...

In 1983 rains in August were followed by dry, windy weather in September that protected Napa Valley’s red varietals from exposure to rot. A greatly reduced crop level produced lean, well-balanced wines for medium-term aging.

Written Notes

Mouton-Rothschild’s winemaker, Lucien Sionneau, and Timothy Mondavi made the partnership’s first vintage at the Robert Mondavi Winery in 1979. This first Opus One was made and aged in barrels at the Robert Mondavi Winery until the fall of 1991, when the winery celebrated its grand opening and first harvest in the new facility. The 1979 had a seemingly perfect growing season from bud break to the beginning of harvest, but it was challenged by rain in September. Early harvesting yielded clean, well-balanced fruit and a wine of resilience and finesse. Blended from 80 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 16 percent Cabernet Franc, 4 percent Merlot and aged for 24 months in new French oak barrels. A fine looking bottle with by the neck level. Decanted 30 minutes. A very bright, dark ruby colour with little browning. An ntense and sound nose, with a touch of cedar, tobacco, dark chocolate, and blackcurrant aromas. Still surprisingly youthful, luscious and mouth-filling, with a medium-full body and good balance. Already a bit too dry and not as complex as one would wish, but it has a long and tasty ending. An excellent first vintage with a few more years to go.
