Written Notes

The Screaming Eagle 2012 is an exceptional display of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon at its finest. On the nose, it offers an alluring bouquet of ripe blackberries, cassis, and dark cherries, layered with subtle hints of graphite, tobacco, and dark chocolate. The palate is full-bodied yet incredibly elegant, with silky, finely integrated tannins that frame the fruit beautifully.

Flavors of juicy black currants and black plums unfold alongside delicate notes of crushed violets, cedar, and a touch of espresso, adding complexity and depth. The balance between its rich fruit profile and the fresh acidity creates a sense of lift and grace, leading to a long, persistent finish with a whisper of minerality and earthy undertones.

This vintage shows remarkable finesse and aging potential, making it both powerful and refined, with layers that will continue to evolve for decades.

This shows a very compact palate with superb complexity and precision with aromas and flavors ranging from blackberries and black truffles to black tea and wet earth. It’s full-bodied and finely grained with a light, woody complexity underneath it all. Extremely long and persistent on the palate. Drink or hold.

The 2012 Screaming Eagle is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Ripe, flamboyant and opulent to the core, the 2012 races across the palate with stunning depth and pure texture. The flavors are dark, bold and expressive. This is one of the darker, more powerful 2012s readers will come across. Because of the long, temperate growing season, winemaker Nic Gislason opted to wait until mid-October to harvest, very late by the estate's historical standards. Estate Manager Armand de Maigret told me the 2012 reminds him of the 2007. I don't quite see that parallel, but it will be interesting to taste both vintages from bottle in a few years to find out.

Gorgeous nose of violets, jasmine, red currant and sweet spices. A glorious vintage for Screaming Eagle with complex, subtle layers of dark berries, red flowers and great freshness. The palate is lifted and focused with detailed flavors that have energy and length. A fantastic vintage that combines elegance and freshness with intensity and structure for long term aging - a difficult combination to achieve.

Inside Information

Founded in 1986 by Jean Phillips, Screaming Eagle Winery and Vineyards was one of the original cult wineries. Located in Oakville, the 57-acre winery was by 1992 winning rave reviews from such critics as Robert M. Parker Jr. Heidi Peterson Barrett was the winemaker in those years and the wine became so sought-after that it was one of the first to be available only through mailing lists. Screaming Eagle makes primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, though it occasionally produces very limited amounts of Sauvignon Blanc. In 2006 Phillips sold the winery to businessman E. Stanley Kroenke, who continues to produce very limited quantities of about 400 to 600 cases a year. In 2012 the winery released Second Flight, a Cabernet Franc and Merlot blend.
